Written Rock
Written Rock shelter is located in Clear Creek Metro Park. The park is part of the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. Even though it is in Fairfield and Hocking Counties. Written Rock is located on the Fairfield County side. It is about 40-minute drive from downtown Columbus.
About Written Rock
Written Rock is a part of Ohio history. It was once the best-preserved example of polissoirs in the State of Ohio. The rock face also has carvings that date back to 1855. However, over the years deterioration from weather and graffiti have greatly damaged these historical aspects.
What is a Polissoir
Polissoir is French for polisher. A polissoir is a tool that is used for polishing or grinding. The polissoir at Written Rock in Clear Creek Metro Park is a set of grooves located in the rock at the base of the blackhand sandstone cliff. It is believed that the groves were made by Native Americans as they polished their axes and other tools.
As you can see the rock is covered in graffiti.

Written Rock shelter is just a quick stop. It is the perfect spot to get those family outing pictures, while taking in a bit of local history.

There are no restrooms as Written Rock. However, there are restrooms available at the 3 major parking area.
Bicycles are not permitted on the trails in Clear Creek Metro Park. However, bicycles are permitted on Clear Creek Road, so you can stop by to check out Written Rock shelter if you are riding by.
Clear Creek Metro Park is an Ohio birding hotpsot.
No bridge.
Concealed carry is permitted.
Pets are permitted at Written Rock.
There is no trail at Written Rock.
Off road parking.
There are no picnic tables at Written Rock. However, there are picnic tables available at other areas of Clearcreek Ponds Metro Park.
There is no playground.
There are no benches available.
There is sun and shade.
No shelter house at Written Rock. There are shelter houses at Glacier Knoll picnic area and Wood Duck picnic area.
There are no trash cans at Written Rock.
No water at Written Rock. However, just across the road is fishing access. You can get to it from the Starner House Park Office.
No ADA parking spot.
Fishing is permitted at the fishing access located across the road.
